Curriculum Area: Special Educational Needs (SEN)

In keeping with our Mission Statement, we believe that each child is made in God’s image and is a unique individual. Through the teaching of Christ, our support for SEND pupils is positively based on a sense of love and respect.

Following in the footsteps of Christ we work, play, pray and grow together.

Curriculum Intent

Working in partnership with other agencies we aim to provide a positive educational experience for all pupils including those with additional needs. St. Joseph’s is committed to removing barriers to learning in order to give all pupils every opportunity to reach their full potential. As pupils with SEND move through St Joseph’s they are supported to grow, flourish and become independent learners. We strive to offer a broad and balanced curriculum, which is differentiated to enable children to achieve success and raise their self-esteem and mental wellbeing. We provide an environment where all children feel safe and secure.  We aim to meet the needs of individual children through highly effective teaching and learning. This enables them to become resilient learners with healthy attitudes towards the learning process and an understanding of how it works and their increasingly important role in it. There is an emphasis on early identification of needs through supportive and preventative strategies, which reduce barriers to learning.

Our curriculum is intended to be accessible and engaging to all regardless of: starting point, SEND, background, gender, religion or culture. It is designed to support the closing of gaps and offer equality of opportunity. It provides support and challenge to those who need it. We undertake a rigorous system of monitoring children’s progress, supporting both academic and personal achievement, by removing barriers to learning and using a wide range of strategies to foster a culture of lifelong learning and independent living skills for all children. At St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, we support all pupils to develop clear aspirations and goals and to develop their social and emotional skills. This enables them to overcome adversity and pursue lifelong learning in order to achieve their future aims.
