Art and Design
Welcome to art and design at St. Joseph’s where we believe every child should have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and see themselves as an artist! Art and design encourages self-expression and creativity as well as the development of our talents; it can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identify. This in turn, helps to develop critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us. As our art and design lessons form part of our wider ‘Creative Curriculum’ topics, the children explore their Art and Design challenges in contexts and themes that are relevant to them and the topic they are learning.
All children at St. Joseph’s are exposed to a diverse range of artists, craft makers, designers and architects; including both contemporary and classical work, from a range of cultural backgrounds. The curriculum is organised into key areas: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printing & textiles. All children from Year 1 upwards are encouraged to take ownership of their sketch books which they use to explore and express their creatives ideas freely and with confidence.
